Linda Pennock has lots to e-mail home about these days. The O’Hara Park Middle School technology guru is garnering plenty of attention as the software-savvy force behind the school’s national Web site award.

A company called Teacher Web recently singled out O’Hara Park’s Web site from hundreds of schools for its user-friendly, cyber-smart approach to education. As a result, the school’s site has been posted on Teacher Web’s site as an example of good design.

O’Hara Park’s mascot – an enthusiastic, and in this case, bouncing, bulldog – welcomes visitors to the site. Bright red, highlighted pages draw the eye to the daily updates and bulletins while the numerous links offer help on a variety of topics.

Pennock has taken a sometimes intimidating interface and made it user-friendly, but she’s a bit aw-shucks about what she’s accomplished.

Introduced to the Teacher Web program a few years ago during a library workshop, Pennock, who has always had an affinity for computers, decided to fool around with the teacher-based software and see what she could design. The result was so impressive that school officials decided to implement the program throughout the district.

Ongoing updates to the Web site, which include daily school bulletins, calendar events and club and newsletter additions, have made the site an integral part of Pennock’s school routine and one of her favorite activities.
